CARDA CREATION
April 10, 2008 - It looks like Alberta's roller derby referees have found a way to work together. Although in it's rough stages thus far, the Coalition of Alberta Roller Derby Officials (CARDO) does have a Yahoo! group, where refs can share information, discuss calls, and offer their services to other leagues when visiting. It is a great step forward, not only for officials, but all of roller derby in this great province!

WILD ROSE II
The second installment of the Wild Rose Challenge went down on April 5, 2008 at the Big Four on Stampede grounds. It was a hard-fought bout between Calgary's Hellion Rebellion, and an injury-weakened Oil City team from Edmonton. The final score of 117-27 didn't do the game justice, as it was a fast-paced, exciting game to watch - or so I'm told. It might sound like a contradiction, but you don't get to see a lot of the game when you're reffing!

KILLHOUSE VAN BOUTIN'
is a women's flat track roller derby referee who lives in Airdrie and refs in Calgary. He has been reffing roller derby for nearly two years, and is known to be a real stickler when it comes to the rules, and is a strong and vocal opponent of in-game streaking. Currently the Head Referee for the Calgary Roller Derby Association, Killhouse enjoys finding new and nosier whistles in his spare time.

THE SPORT

Roller derby is a very media-friendly sport. There are lots of great photo opportunities, and on occasion, a ref will be captured in the background of a photo or video. It's not fame, but it's the closest we get. Check here for a collection of images that will have you saying "hey, is that Killhouse in the background there?"

Roller derby has a long and colourful history. Personally, I find the history fascinating. As a referee, I couldn't care less about the history - all I need to know are the rules, baby. Here's a collection of peronally interesting historical background information, and a cut-and-dried review of the rules.
